Craig Von Deylen, AIA (American Institute of Architects) created Deylen Homes in 1993 as a family business. His idea was to offer custom residential construction services drawing upon Craig’s experience as a licensed architect. Deylen Homes started by deliberately building only one home in its first year of operation. By the summer of 1994 Craig was ready to let the new company become his full time occupation.
“We were doing everything from scratch during those first years. We knew how to build, but we really had little experience with the business of construction,” Craig explains. In order to further strengthen the company’s business approach Todd Von Deylen, an entrepreneurial business graduate, joined the company in 1997 and controls the financial aspects of the growing business. After Todd joined the company the brothers identified opportunities in development and high-end renovation that have diversified Deylen Homes.
By 1999 Deylen Homes had grown into an annual sales volume of more than $4 million, and Craig had developed enough design business to support a small architecture firm. Craig joined Scott B. Perkins, a noted architect and designer, and formed the formal architecture firm of Perkins, Von Deylen Architects (PVA).
“Our organization is really unique. We have managed to combine almost all of the aspects of building under one roof creating synergies that would be hard to duplicate in any other forum,” explained Scott Perkins.
In 2005 Craig discovered a unique opportunity in the historic Fletcher Place Community Center. He envisioned New York style lofts with soaring ceilings in what was formerly a basketball court. The project was completed in 2007 and has since won the Historic Preservation Adaptive Use Award.
“Fletcher Place offers the draw of an historic neighborhood in an urban setting with numerous redevelopment opportunities.” says Craig of his commitment to this downtown neighborhood. Deylen has recently broken ground on a brand new mixed use development across the street from the Fletcher Place Lofts.
Future plans for Deylen Homes include another mixed use building which will have a tie into the Indianapolis arts community, as well as continuing its successful single family custom home building business.
